What does search engine optimization mean and what are the on-page SEO and off-page SEM factors that will make your website successful?

  1. On-page SEO – The content (words), graphics and photographs (eye-candy) that sell your service, product or ideas must be carefully crafted, relevant and natural.  The information must tell search engines and browsers your story.
  2. Off-page SEM- links, code that points to your website must be carefully chosen, crafted and relevant to the target URL (web page) and tell search engines and browsers about your web page content.
  3. SEO is a global term used to describe SEO-SEM work done both on page and off page.

We have decided to refer to work on our web pages as seo-search engine optimisation and off our web pages as sem – search engine marketing to help reduce confusion.

Recently, we talk about Google as if it were a person – an ‘old-mate’ in fact, when actually search engines are not Webmaster’s mates in any sense of the word, I suppose these days they are unavoidable! Overboard?  No, we emphasize a point to ensure your understanding.

For instance, Google is really a program that finds websites after submission or via links. Google uses an ever-evolving algorithm to recognize theme and web page content.  It detects theme and word relevance by measuring your key words and key phrases – keyword positioning; key word densities; the alt tags you attach to graphics; Meta Title and Meta Description and the links to and from the web page to index your web page.

Pages (code) are fetched by a spider, robot, or crawler and once your page is fetched it is loaded into a huge database and the page broken down to code so that your web pages are indexed and stored ready for retrieval when a user searches your keywords or key phrases.

Only when stored and indexed is your web page ready for retrieval by the crawling program. The object of Google programming is to ensure your indexed web page deliver quality and relevant search results to the search engine user.

REMEMBER: Google is not your mate because you are not important.  Google’s goal is to make search engine users happy.

A harsh reality – everything about a search engine is characterized by a ‘psychopathic yearning’ to deliver quality search engine results.  Even Webmaster Tools are about helping Webmasters help search engines deliver the highest quality search results to the search engine user.
